DSA scan at Hospital 199

DSA stands for Digital Subtraction Angiography. This is an advanced imaging technique that uses X-rays combined with a computer to create clear images of blood vessels in the body.

What is DSA used for?

  1. Diagnosis of vascular diseases:
  • Vascular stenosis: Detects and evaluates the degree of narrowing and occlusion of arteries and veins due to atherosclerosis, blood clots or other causes.
  • Vascular aneurysms: Determine the location, size and morphology of vascular aneurysms, especially cerebral aneurysms.
  • Vascular malformations: Detect congenital or acquired abnormalities of the vascular system, such as arteriovenous malformations (AVMs).
  • Vascular hemorrhage: Determines the location of bleeding in cases of internal bleeding, gastrointestinal bleeding, etc.
  • Peripheral vascular disease: Evaluates the condition of blood vessels in the arms and legs.
  1. Interventions to treat vascular diseases:
  • Thrombectomy: Removes blood clots that block blood vessels.
  • Angioplasty and stenting: Opens narrowed blood vessels and maintains blood flow.
  • Vascular embolization: Blocks abnormal blood vessels (e.g. in the treatment of uterine fibroids, liver tumors, bleeding).
  1. Tumor vascular assessment: Helps determine the blood supply to the tumor, assisting in treatment planning (e.g., chemical embolization).
  2. Organ vascular studies: DSA can be used to study blood vessels in many different organs such as the brain, heart, kidneys, liver, etc.
