LIMB ARTERY RECOVERY USING DSA ANGIOGRAM AND INTERVENTION IN DA NANG

On April 11, 2025, the Cardiology Department – 199 Hospital successfully performed angiography and intervention on two cases of complex lower limb arterial disease using digital subtraction angiography (DSA) and intervention techniques.

Accordingly, the first case is a female patient, 83 years old, with a history of hypertension and left partial hip replacement. She was hospitalized because of symptoms of swelling, heat, pain, and purple left foot for about a week. Examination revealed weak dorsalis pedis, anterior tibial, and posterior tibial pulses.

The second case, a 69-year-old male patient with a history of hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, gastric ulcer, and smoking. He was admitted to the hospital because of intermittent claudication when walking. Examination revealed poor dorsalis pedis and posterior tibial pulses on both sides, and muscle atrophy in both muscles.

After performing the necessary tests, the two patients were diagnosed with: Arteritis nodosa of the lower limbs leading to complications of reduced blood flow and leg necrosis. Immediately afterwards, the patients were performed by Master- Dr Tran Minh Thoai – an expert from the Department of Interventional Cardiology (Friendship Hospital) in collaboration with the team of doctors from the Cardiovascular Intervention Unit (199 Hospital) to perform angiography and successfully perform stent placement to re-open the limb arteries using modern, specialized DSA techniques.

These are the first two lower limb arterial interventions at 199 Hospital, marking the next step between the two hospitals after signing a cooperation agreement to transfer professional techniques. After the intervention, the patients were stable, able to exercise and walk.

Master Dr Lam Quan Thuan – Cardiology Department – 199 Hospital recommends: “Who with symptoms similar to the two cases mentioned above – intermittent claudication. That is, pain in the calf when walking, reduced when resting. Numbness or feeling of weakness in the limbs. Pale, purple skin on the legs or slow-healing ulcers, immediately go to the nearest medical facility for detection, diagnosis and treatment. At the same time, be proactive in prevention by: Quitting smoking (the leading risk factor for atherosclerosis and arterial occlusion. Control blood pressure, blood sugar, blood lipids. Maintain a reasonable weight, eat healthy. Increase physical activity”.
